Pollution Prevention (P2) Internship
Program
The Pollution Prevention (P2) Internship
Program provides a forum for government, academia,
and businesses to partner in improving Hamilton County's
environment. The non-regulatory, 12-week summer program
focuses mainly on solid waste reduction and diversion,
but can also include improving air and water quality
and designing an environmental management system.
Well-developed methods for reducing waste streams
while saving money are achieved by integrating pollution
prevention into core business practices.
This program is a partnership between:
-
The Hamilton County Solid Waste Management
District (District) maintains the program, provides
training
and technical support, and funds the majority
of the program.
-
Local universities and colleges
supply the talent and enthusiasm of top
students.
-
Businesses fund the remainder of the program,
identify issues, and cooperate in the
implementation of the intern's suggestion
Because each partner is equally engaged in working
towards pollution prevention, dramatic results
are achieved.
For the last four years, the District has employed
interns to assist local area manufacturers. Their
research has provided a potential cost savings
of over $135,871 and a potential waste reduction
of 1,295 tons.
