Tips for Successful Recycling at Your Event

By following these simple steps, you can reduce waste at your next event.

Get the Word Out

Generate enthusiasm with event planners and patrons. Make announcements in news releases, websites, social media, newsletters, and/or church bulletins. During the event, include announcements reminding patrons to recycle their plastic bottles and cans.

Know What can be Recycled and Where it can be Dropped Off:

Do Recycle:

  • Plastic Bottles and Jugs
  • Aluminum and Steel Cans
  • Cardboard
  • Paperboard
  • Paper
  • Brown Paper Bags
  • Glass Bottles and Jars (remove lids)
  • Empty Aerosol Cans (remove lids and tips)

Do Not Recycle:

  • Plastic Cups, Tubs, Bowls, and Buckets
  • Polystyrene (Styrofoam)
  • Soiled Paper
  • Waxed and Soiled Cardboard
  • Food Wrappers
  • Plates
  • Napkins
  • Eating Utensils
  • Food
  • Plastic Bags

Don’t forget about your vendors—they generate recyclable waste, mostly cardboard boxes.

Use Only Clear Bags

If you have to use bags, only use clear bags for collecting recyclables. If recyclables are in a bag that is not see-through, workers at the recycling center may assume it’s garbage and
landfill it. It’s best to have recyclables loose in the dumpster.

Place Recycling Receptacles Near Trash Cans

Place recycling containers close to garbage cans. For every recycling container there should be a garbage can almost touching it to help discourage contamination. If you have too much contamination it is likely that all the material will be landfilled. Make sure to provide recycling and garbage containers at all major food areas and exits.

Post Clear Signage

Provide good signage, with pictures, of what can be recycled at each recycling container. Also consider placing signs that say “Recycle These” where drinks are served in bottles and cans.

Post Event Feedback

Offer positive feedback after the event, such as “We saved $_____ by decreasing our landfill waste”, or “Thank you to everyone who helped with the recycling efforts”.
