The District offers excellent
opportunities for teachers to obtain training, development,
new ideas, technical support, and graduate credit through a
variety of workshops. Once again this year, we will offer
several chances to make and take worm bins, those great
teaching tools for home and classroom.
School Recycling
Coordinator Summit: Getting Ready for Earth Day

Exchange recycling lesson
plans, activities, and bulletin board ideas across the
curriculum including science, math, social studies, and
language arts. Preview new outreach presentations by
Crystal Clear Science. Network with other recycling
coordinators to see how they will utilize FREE education
materials and promotional items to recognize Earth Day.
Take the opportunity to see new recycling collection
supplies that several schools have been testing to make
collection easier and more efficient. These collection
supplies are available to schools registered in the
Recycling Assistance Program, based on need. Student
leaders are welcome and encouraged to attend. To register,

Vermicomposting Workshop

An indoor worm bin can
be a fascinating way to recycle your kitchen waste into
rich compost for your favorite plants. You will get
everything you need, including instruction, the bin with
worms and a helpful book entitled Worms Eat my Garbage
by Mary Applehof. Thanks to the support of the District,
you can start vermicomposting for a fraction of the usual
cost. Just add kitchen waste and save landfill space!

Project Learning
Tree "Go Green" Workshop

Project Leaning Tree (PLT) is an award-winning
environmental education program designed for educators,
parents, and community leaders working with youth. Through
hands-on, interdisciplinary activities, PLT provides
students with opportunities to investigate environmental
issues and encourages them to make informed, responsible
decisions. The workshop activities look at environmental
and horticulture issues such as plant growth, soil,
decomposition, recycling, and, of course, trees. In
addition to learning background information and lesson
plans, participants will tour parts of the show and
receive a copy of PLT's latest PreK-8 Activity Guide.
A light breakfast and box lunch will be provided.
Substitute reimbursement is available for teachers at
schools registered in Hamilton County's Recycling
Assistance Program. Graduate credit from U.C. Center for
Economic Education is available at a discount rate of $195
(full credit usually cost $389). Registration required.

Economics and
Environment: Land, Water, and Air Resources

Help
your students learn how to explore land, air and water
resources, focusing on environmental issues through the lens
of simple economic analysis. Activities will link the
social studies and science standards. Learn about local
resources for teaching about land, air and water resources.
All participants receive a copy of the “Energy, Economics
and Environment” teacher guide and a variety of other
creative teaching resources. This program is conducted by
the Economics Center for Education and Research, University
of Cincinnati, in cooperation with the Hamilton County
Department of Environmental Services and Hamilton County
Soil and Water Conservation District. Designed for grades
5-8. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Graduate
credit from U.C. Center for Economic Education is available
at a discount rate of $195 (full credit usually cost $389).
