BCDES Awards Grants to Promote Waste Reduction and Recycling

The Butler County Department of Environmental Services (BCDES) will award more than $15,000 in recycling incentive grants to help local businesses, schools, non-profit agencies and local governments promote waste reduction and recycling practices.

The 2008 grant award recipients are:

  • Schools—Adena, Fillmore, Hopewell, and Seven Mile Elementary Schools,
Fairfield Intermediate School, Badin High School, and Talawanda School
         District.

  • Non-profits—Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum, YWCA of Hamilton,
Keep Middletown Beautiful, the Oxford Community Arts Center

  • Government—The city of Hamilton’s Park and Recreation Department

  • Business—Aeronca Inc., an aerospace company located in Middletown
and Miami University’s Institute of Environmental Services (IES) on behalf
         of the Candlewood Apartment Complex

This year’s grant review process was highly competitive. BCDES received 18 grant applications and more than $53,000 in grant requests. Last year, Butler County only received eight application requests.

“The public and the private sector are now more environmentally aware and that is evident by the number of grant applications we received this year. We commend all of these organizations for implementing long-term recycling,” said Butler County Commissioner Charles Furmon.

BCDES’ grant program will help subsidize the cost of new recycling containers, recycling services and promotional materials.

Here is what some of the recipients plan to the with their grant money:

  • All of the schools will be purchasing new recycling containers to support
ongoing paper recycling programs. Through these programs, the schools
are generating additional revenue that helps sustain long-term recycling
         and school-related activities.

  • Aeronca Inc. will begin a new paper and beverage container recycling
         programs.
Candlewood Apartments is collaborating with IES to implement
a new recycling program for apartment dwellers.

  • Pyramid Hill and Hamilton’s Parks and Recreation Department will purchase
new recycling containers. The city will place containers at Joyce Park
and Potter’s and Twin Run golf courses.
